Police: Some group went and tipped over 2 smart cars in St. Paul

A couple of those small smart cars in St. Paul have been tipped onto their sides, and police suspect some college-age pranksters are to blame.

It appears the vandals are scoping out car2go vehicles – the car-sharing service that's available throughout the Twin Cities and other cities across the globe.

Sgt. Mike Ernster told BringMeTheNews the first incident happened Saturday night around 11 p.m.

Someone called in to report one of the cars had been tipped over in the Macalester-Groveland neighborhood, the Pioneer Press reports. That's southwest of downtown St. Paul near Macalester college.

When officers got there, they found the white and blue smart Smart Fortwo car tipped on its side, the Star Tribune says. The 2015 model weighs a bit under 2,000 pounds., so they're not very big.

A witness said four people between 18 and 20 years old are to blame, according to Ernster. The witness went on to say the vandals got into a gold or tan vehicle and drove off.

Just hours later and no more than six blocks away, it happened again.

Ernster says a homeowner reported hearing a commotion outside around 4 a.m. Then a couple hours later, he saw the tipped car.

"They may think it's a practical joke," the sergeant said.

But these pranks could end up being felony crimes. Ernster said damages have to reach just $1,000 for the crime to be considered a felony.

Authorities are not sure what the cost in damages is yet, but the cars at least have some broken windows and mirrors.

Ernster went on to say these vehicles are very important to people who rely on car2go to get to work or other places.

"The sad part is, now these cars aren't available," he said.

Car2go told the Pioneer Press there are 29,000 people in Twin Cities that are members of the service.

Officials say they're looking for the suspects. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 651-266-5416.
