Police in western Minnesota were able to successfully talk down a wanted felon who threatened to shoot himself in front of officers.

Officers from Granite Falls PD, Yellow Medicine County and Chippewa County sheriff's offices, and the Upper Sioux Community Police attended the standoff in the 700 block of 7th Street in Granite Falls Monday evening.

They had executed a search warrant in order to arrest a 32-year-old known felon who was in possession of a handgun, and was wanted in two other counties in Minnesota on five outstanding warrants.

When they got there, they found the suspect sleeping on the couch in the living room.

But as they woke him and told him to show his hands, the suspect stood up and briefly pointed the gun at the officers, before pointing it at himself and threatening to shoot.

Officers negotiated with the man for almost an hour, asking him to drop the weapon and go with them peacefully.

Eventually, the suspect agreed to cooperate, dropped the gun and was taken to jail.

He's being held on the 5 outstanding warrants as well as local charges stemming from Monday's incident.
