Police: Underage drunk driver crashes head-on into St. Cloud squad car
A suspected drunk driver traveling in the wrong lane smashed head-on into the squad car of an on-duty St. Cloud police officer Sunday morning.
The crash happened around 6:20 a.m. on the 3200 Block of County Road 74, according to a release from the Waite Park Police Department. A St. Cloud police officer was on duty and in a marked squad car - without its lights or siren on - heading southbound on the two-lane road.
The officer then saw a minivan driving directly at him, heading northbound but in the southbound lane. According to police, the officer swerved into the northbound lane to avoid a collision - but at the same moment, the driver of the minivan did the same.
The two vehicles crashed head-on, causing extensive damage to both. Waite Park police provided a photo of the St. Cloud squad car, seen above.
The officer, who suffered only minor injuries, was able to exit the vehicle to check on the minivan driver, a 20-year-old woman from Waite Park. She was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to police.
Waite Park PD alleges the woman was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, noting charges are pending.
