A Burnsville police officer fatally shot an armed, suicidal man Monday night.

Police were called to an apartment complex on the 1600 block of Cliff Road East in Burnsville around 8:25 p.m. for a report of a suicidal man who had left the complex with a gun, according to a news release.

Officials searched the area with the help of a State Police helicopter equipped with heat sensors. They located the man just before 9:30 p.m. – he was in the tree line near the apartment complex.

When officers approached the man, they saw he had a gun. One of the officers fired shots, killing him, the release says. No other details regarding what led up to the shooting were released.

The officers involved were wearing body cameras at the time of the incident. Burnsville police began training officers with body cameras in 2010 – it was the first agency in the state and one of the first in the U.S. to use body camera technology, a department report said.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the shooting, with the release noting no officers were injured.

This appears to be the 11th fatal officer-involved shooting in Minnesota this year, according to the Washington Post's police shooting database, and the second by Burnsville police in 2016.

In March, officers fatally shot Map Kong outside of a McDonalds. Police say he was brandishing a weapon.

Police were wearing body cameras in that incident too. They released that footage in June after a grand jury determined the officers were justified in their use of lethal force.
