Just in time for the State Fair, Minnesota has a new Princess Kay of the Milky Way.

The Associated Press reports that MarJenna McWilliam, 20, from Winger, was crowned at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds Wednesday night.

The Polk County dairy princess is the 60th woman to win the honor. The runners-up were Rachel Rostad of Wanamingo, in Goodhue County and Katie Schmitt of Rice, in Benton County.

Over the next year, McWilliam, an English major at North Dakota State University, will serve as a goodwill ambassador for Minnesota's nearly 4,000 dairy farmers.

McWilliam will be at the opening day at the Minnesota State Fair Thursday to carry out her first official duty -- where she will sit in a rotating cooler at the Dairy Building so she have her likeness carved in a 90-pound block of butter.

The Midwest Dairy Association says candidates for the Princess Kay title judged on their general knowledge of dairy industry, communication skills, personality and enthusiasm for dairy promotion.

The gates for the State Fair open daily at 6 a.m. and ticket booths are open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The fairgrounds are open from 6 a.m. to midnight.

One of the biggest attractions, of course, is the State Fair's food.

The Star Tribune has a list of the 10 Fair Favorites you don't want to miss. In all, there are 300 concessionaires serve more than 450 different food offerings.

The Pioneer Press has a slideshow of State Fair Foods through the years.

The Star Tribune also has a list of the top five free items at the fair, from reusable bags to yardsticks.

On the least attractive but must-have list for all fairgoers are the restrooms, and the Pioneer Press says the State Fair will be flush with them.

The Grandstand entertainment for the opening night of the fair will be stand-up by a trio of former "Saturday Night Live" stars -- Dana Carvey, Dennis Miller and Kevin Nealon.

Other Grandstand acts this week include Smash Mouth, Sugar Ray and the Gin Blossom on Friday, Sammy Hagar on Saturday and Sheryl Crow on Sunday.
