The Star Tribune's Minnesota poll on Wednesday reveals that a majority of people in the state do not favor legalizing gay marriage.

The survey found that 53 percent of Minnesotans say lawmakers should not change the state statute that bars same-sex unions. Thirty-eight percent of respondents said legislators should change the law, the newspaper reports. Nine percent were undecided.

Among residents outside the Twin Cities metro area, the poll found overwhelming opposition to gay marriage legalization, with 73 percent opposed, the Star Tribune reports. Statewide, 64 percent of male respondents oppose legalizing same-sex marriages, the newspaper reports.

The poll of 800 Minnesotans was taken Feb. 25-27 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points, the newspaper reports.

The poll offers a snapshot of public opinion four months after voters in Minnesota rejected a measure that would have cemented a ban on gay marriage in the state's constitution. And it comes just as lawmakers have begun to consider a newly introduced bill that would legalize gay marriage.

Nine states currently allow gay marriage.
