A western Minnesota woman says she killed an abusive man with his own rifle after he spent five hours assaulting her in their rural Pope County home, according to law enforcement authorities.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension issued a statement identifying Anthony Ray Tullis, 25, as the man whom authorities found dead in his home in Gilchrist Township.

The BCA says a woman who also lived in the home told investigators Tullis had forced her into a bedroom "and repeatedly assaulted her over five hours, during which time he allegedly made several threats to her life," the Bureau's statement says.

The woman says when she was able to gain control of Tullis' rifle she shot him with it.

As the West Central Tribune reports, the BCA has joined the sheriff's office in investigating Tullis' death.

The woman is not in custody, authorities say. The Star Tribune reports the findings of the investigation will be forwarded to the Pope County Attorney's office, which will make a determination about whether the shooting was a criminal act or was in self-defense.
