Popeyes to take over 14 Twin Cities KFC locations

AFC Enterprises, Popeyes' Atlanta-based parent company, is planning to buy 14 KFC restaurants from a bankrupt franchisee, a major push for the fried chicken chain that has only one lone location on Lake Street in south Minneapolis. The deal is part of a $13.8 million purchase of 28 restaurants in Minnesota and California. The new locations in a handful of metro cities will be quickly converted once the bid is approved by a judge.

A bankruptcy judge has approved a deal that allows Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen to buy 14 KFC restaurants in the Twin Cities, even though a bid from another KFC franchisee involved more money, the Star Tribune reports. Creditor GE Capital said it preferred the "certainty" of the smaller offer from Popeyes.

AFC Enterprises Inc. plans to open more Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen restaurants in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. According to a news release, Atlanta-based chain is buying bankrupt eateries in Minnesota and California. AFC has not said how many locations will be based in the Twin Cites metro.

The country band is opening its own chain of themed restaurants around the United States and Canada. Rascal Flatts' first location will be in Phoenix. More restaurants are planned for next year, including one in the Twins Cities metro.

St. Louis Park-based Granite City Food and Brewery says it will open its first new location in nearly two years. The new restaurant in Troy, Mich. will be the chain's 27th location. It's scheduled to open in February.

Famous Dave's of America has appointed board member John Gilbert III as its new chief executive officer, the Pioneer Press reports. Current CEO Christopher O'Donnell will stay with the Minnetonka-based barbecue restaurant chain as its president and chief operating officer. Gilbert was most recently the CEO of Vermont Teddy Bear.

The Maine-based franchise plans to open new restaurants in Rochester, Waconia and a third unnamed Minnesota location this year. Ground Round already has restaurants in Bemidji, Grand Rapids, Winona and Worthington.
