Pothole season: Crews scramble to pave moonscape roads

The going has gotten tougher for drivers in the last few weeks as potholes emerge in an annual rite of Minnesota spring.

How quickly workers fill the potholes depends on a number of factors, including the depth and size of the holes and how busy the street is, KARE 11 reports. Snowstorms put fixes on hold, the station reports.

Cities, counties and the state all have responsibility for filling potholes in their roads. Crews this month have already been out scrambling to make temporary fixes to the craters, until more permanent repair work can be done this summer, the Star Tribune reported.

But crews haven't been fast enough to stop a growing puddle of sarcastic and whiny tweets, which the Pioneer Press has collected.

How do potholes form? Here's a simple MnDOT graphic that explains it.

In St. Paul, rattled residents can call 651-266-9700 or email at to report potholes. In Minneapolis, residents can call 311, or fill out an online form.
