The Northland FireWire reports that the fire was reported around 5:15 a.m. Sunday at Waters Island on Burntside Lake, which is located just northwest of Ely in far northern Minnesota.
The transformer exploded near a summer residence/boathouse, catching the structures on fire and then spreading to two nearby cabins and an outbuilding.
All of the buildings were destroyed, in addition to two residents being treated by Ely Ambulance Service for possible smoke inhalation.
The fire was combated by the Morse-Fall Lake Fire Department, Ely Fire Department, Babbitt Fire Department and the U.S. Forest Service.
