Pre-trial next month for mom who survived pond crash

The mother who was behind the wheel when her car crashed into a retaining pond last November, killing two children and injuring three others, was in court Wednesday.

KSTP reported that the judge overseeing the pre-trial hearing for 23-year-old Marion Guerrido decided to continue it until next month. Guerrido is facing three misdemeanor charges, including driving without insurance, violating the rules of her license permit, and not properly buckling in some of the children.

Last November, Guerrido’s car carrying five children veered off a highway ramp in St. Louis Park and landed in a holding pond. Guerrido had a learner's permit that required her to drive with a licensed driver; she was the only adult in the car at the time it plunged into the water. In March, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced no felony charges would be filed against Guerrido.

Guerrido is also accused of neglecting one of the surviving girls; she has a July 11 court date to answer neglect charges in juvenile court. She and the girl's father, Julius Rennie, 25, are accused of failing to provide food and medical care for their daughter. Authorities say the girl, who turns 2 this month, suffered brain and organ damage in the accident.

In April, the parents told a child-protection investigator they'd removed the girl's feeding tube over infection concerns. But the parents didn't pursue medical care, and they missed medical and therapy appointments.
