Preparing for winter weather, Duluth School District adds late start policy

Following eight school closures last school year because of winter weather, Duluth Public Schools has added a new option for the 2014-15 school year.

According to the Duluth News Tribune, the school announced in an email Wednesday that the district will be able to choose whether to start school days two hours late.

Superintendent Bill Gronseth says the policy arose after input from parents, administrators and teachers.

Gronsen, who calls the new policy “another tool in the toolbox to address the ever-changing weather of Duluth," says that least two school days could have been salvaged with a late start last year, the News Tribune reports.

Northlands NewsCenter said that the school district made up two of its snow days last year by shortening spring break, and added more than 12 minutes to its school day to make up another day-and-a-half.

Several school districts across the state were affected by winter weather conditions -- especially extreme cold -- this past school year. Gov. Mark Dayton ordered all state schools closed Jan. 6, marking the first time a Minnesota governor closed schools statewide due to weather since 1997.
