Gov. Tim Walz says Minnesota stands ready to complete President Joe Biden's call on states to make COVID-19 vaccines available to all adults by May 1.

Minnesota moved to the next phase of its vaccine plan on Wednesday after achieving the target of getting at least one shot to 70% of over-65s three weeks earlier than originally planned.

And with vaccine supplies accelerating, aided by the addition of the Johnson & Johnson one-shot vaccine to the country's approved vaccines, Biden on Thursday told states to make the vaccine available to all American adults, regardless of age or their work or health status, by May 1.

The Walz Administration on Wednesday said that vaccines would be made available to the wider general public by the summer, after priority groups have had their shots.

But with Biden bringing the timeline forward, the governor said the state's health system stands ready.

"Minnesota is ready," he said Thursday evening. "The President’s announcement tonight is the shot in the arm we all need. With a strong federal partner, and the work we have done in Minnesota to prepare, we are ready to meet this moment and end this pandemic."

As of Mar. 9, 1,129,967 have received at least one shot of the Pfizer or Moderna two-shot vaccines – while 642,701 have completed their vaccine series (2 shots of Pfizer/Moderna, or single-shot J&J).

Walz also called on all Minnesotan adults to "roll up your sleeves and get your shot when it's your turn." It comes as national poll found that 34% of Republican voters, 30% of independents, and 10% of Democrats said they wouldn't be getting the shot.
