A 17-year-old boy being held in connection with this week's death of a 2-year-old Minneapolis girl can remain in custody until Monday without being charged, the Hennepin County Attorney says.

County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Friday that his office has been granted an extension and now has until 1:30 p.m. Monday to either file criminal charges against the teen or release him.

Few details have been released about the child's death.

Officers responded Wednesday to a call about a child not breathing at the 2800 block of 30th Avenue S. in Minneapolis, according to the Star Tribune.

Sophia O'Neill was taken by ambulance to Hennepin County Medical Center where she died. The county's medical examiner has not yet released a report on the cause of death.

According to several news accounts, the teen in custody is the boyfriend of the 2-year-old's mother. He's being held in the Juvenile Detention Center.

Sophia's father told the Star Tribune she died of internal bleeding.

Her father claims he saw injuries he suspected were the result of abuse and reported it to child protection in February, but no investigation occurred, according to the newspaper.

The boy's grandmother spoke with FOX 9 and KSTP, and she had a different story, saying the 17-year-old tried to save her and had a good relationship with Sophia.
