Protesters take to Mpls. streets over DACA decision

Marchers wind through streets to downtown rally.

Demonstrators marched through Minneapolis Tuesday evening to show they oppose a White House plan to phase out the Deferred Action against Childhood Arrivals program (DACA).

Hundreds of people gathered in the Seward neighborhood outside the state Republican Party's headquarters and marched through the U of M campus to a downtown Minneapolis rally planned by the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee.

The streets demonstrators used were closed to traffic and the march appeared to go peacefully.

Along their route, the protesters dropped off a petition at the office of U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, FOX 9 reports, urging her to stand up against efforts to end DACA.

Marchers then moved on to Hennepin County's public safety building. A video posted by the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee shows sheriff's deputies blocking the doors to the building. Some protesters then sat down on the pavement in front of the doors, chanting and listening to speakers.

The Star Tribune shows some of the demonstrators held signs denouncing Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek.

Organizers said they planned to wrap up the march at the Federal Building downtown.

Under the White House plan announced Tuesday Congress has six months to pass a law that could keep part or all of the DACA program, which lets immigrants who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children get work permits and avoid deportation.

As CNN reports, the Minneapolis protest was among several around the country Tuesday.
