Public forum set to inform people about MNsure

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network is holding a public forum in southeast Minneapolis Thursday to inform people more about MNsure, The Associated Press reports.

MNsure, the state's online health insurance exchange, is designed to help people on public programs, at small businesses and businesses who don’t get insurance at the workplace to get coverage.

The AP says MNsure is planning to conduct outreach about the program, especially to Minnesota communities with the highest rates of health disparities and uninsured people.

Open enrollment for MNsure begins Oct. 1.

Thursday's forum will be held at the U Garden Restaurant on University Ave. from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The meeting comes as debate begins to heat up over the start of MNsure.

Hoping to trump the state's big public information push for MNsure next month, the advocacy group Citizens' Council for Health Freedom recently put up a billboard on Snelling Ave., urging people to refuse the health exchange.

The billboard's placement is designed to attract the attention of the estimated 1.7 million people expect to attend the Minnesota State Fair through Labor Day, Sept. 2.

Minnesota is one of 16 states and Washington, D.C., to build a health exchange. The Minnesota based Citizens' Council has been a longtime opponent of health exchanges and the Affordable Health Care Act, also known as Obamacare.

State officials are hoping that more than 1 million Minnesotans ultimately enroll in the program.
