The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is opening a month-long conversation about a plan to improve fishing and swimming throughout the state. Its wants to reduce the flow of nutrients like phosphorous and nitrogen in wastewater runoff. An executive summary of the draft proposal is available here.

The plan is part of 12-state program to try to reverse the hypoxic conditions in the Gulf of Mexico, also known as the dead zone for its lack of oxygen.

In Minnesota, the priorities will be improving the Lake Superior, Mississippi River and Lake Pepin watersheds.

The Associated Press reports the first meeting is 3 p.m. Monday at the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency in St. Paul.

Other meetings are scheduled for Tuesday at the Department of Natural Resources in New Ulm, Nov. 26 at the county government center in Willmar, Dec. 3 at the St. James Hotel in Red Wing, Dec. 4 at the county services building in Fergus Falls and Dec. 10 at the MPCA office in Duluth.
