Minnesota loses jobs in July; unemployment rate stays steady

Minnesota’s July unemployment rate held steady at 4-point-5 percent, although the state lost 4,200 jobs last month. In reporting the figures, the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development said the loss of jobs "appears disappointing," but "economic indicators remain positive." Minnesota’s jobless rate remains well below the national average of 6.2 percent.

Man killed in gas station shooting honored as suspected domestic violence victim

The Boston Scientific executive shot to death this week is being remembered as a suspected domestic violence victim. Police are searching for Lyle Hoffman in connection with the shooting at the Arden Hills gas station. They say Hoffman and victim Kelly Phillips had been in a personal and business relationship. The Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women will raise flags to remember Phillips, an action the group typically takes following domestic violence homicides. Last year, 40 people in Minnesota were killed in domestic violence incidents. That number includes seven men.

Thousands expected for Eagan outlet mall grand opening

It’s opening day for one of Minnesota’s biggest retail expansions. A new outlet mall in Eagan will make its first sales today, after more than a year of construction. The $100 million project includes more than 100 stores. Eagan is bracing for traffic jams during the four-day grand opening. The employees alone number about 2,000.
