Quit speeding through the Lowry Tunnel – officials made 179 stops in a week

Troopers have issued 159 citations.

Slow down in construction areas. State officials have been warning people all summer.

Not only is it dangerous to you, other drivers and construction workers – you could end up with a hefty fine. And according to the Minnesota State Patrol, a lot of people are in the process of paying those off.

Between June 28 and July 5, troopers made 179 stops and issued 159 citations. And that's just in the Lowry Tunnel area.

There will be extra patrols out watching for speeding drivers. That'll go until July 23.

Just follow the posted speeds.

Last month, MnDOT dropped the speed limit on I-94 between Nicollet Avenue in Minneapolis and Shingle Creek Parkway in Brooklyn Center. That's because there were 275 crashes in just three months.

Lowry Tunnel construction

The Lowry Tunnel area is a mess right now because it's part of MnDOT’s big, $46.3 million construction project on a 9-mile stretch of the interstate between Minneapolis and Brooklyn Center. The entire project is expected to be finished next year, but the Lowry Tunnel closures will only be for the next few months.

Through mid-September, there will be lane closures and restrictions.

The lanes through the Lowry Tunnel are skinnier than normal, too. So the speed limits are lower.

You can read more about the project here.
