Racing panel rejects e-blackjack at Running Aces

The Minnesota Racing Commission has rejected a request by Running Aces Harness Park to offer electronic blackjack games, the Star Tribune reports.

Commission members Thursday said they appreciated the arguments made by Running Aces officials, who said electronic blackjack tables would draw new tech-savvy gamblers to the track in northern Anoka County, the newspaper says.

But the panel voted 5-4 to reject the proposal. Among the concerns was that the electronic blackjack tables that Running Aces had wanted to install could be considered slot machines, which under Minnesota law are legal only at tribal casinos, the Star Tribune reports.

The harness park currently offers "Las Vegas-style" gambling in its card room, including blackjack and poker.

MinnPost last summer profiled the harness park, now in its fifth year of operation, and noted that the card room was its salvation. The track doesn't even have grandstand seating. It's not clear how long Running Aces can continue without racino offerings, MinnPost noted.
