A new hotel aimed at a younger clientele is coming to downtown St. Paul.
The Radisson Red hotel will be built across the street from the Xcel Energy Center, city officials announced Monday.
It'll be the second in the hotel chain's new brand to be located in the Twin Cities; the first Red is planned in downtown Minneapolis near the new Vikings stadium.
The 150-room hotel is part of the larger development of the so-called Seven Corners Gateway site, which right now is a parking lot bounded by Smith Avenue, Kellogg Boulevard, West 7th and West 5th streets.
A team of Opus Development Co. and Greco, both based in the Twin Cities, is leading the redevelopment of the entire site. In addition to the hotel, their plan for the property includes market-rate family housing, retail and public space, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
Developing that site has been a top priority for the city of St. Paul, because of its proximity to the Xcel Energy Center and visibility to traffic entering downtown from Interstate 94 and Interstate 35E, the Star Tribune notes.
“The revitalization of this site is an important step in building on the momentum of an exciting Downtown Saint Paul,” Mayor Chris Coleman said in a news release.
Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group, based in Minnetonka, is a partner and owner of the Radisson Red, which will be designed to appeal to "millenials and millenial-minded guests" by incorporating "design, art, music and fashion," according to city officials. The hotel will include a bar, deli and other spaces for socializing, said the Pioneer Press.
The next step in the process is for the developers to come up with more detailed plans for each element of the project, and they have until April to do that before seeking city approval, according to the Star Tribune.
There used to be a Radisson hotel in downtown St. Paul, on Kellogg Boulevard overlooking the Mississippi River. The 21-story building was a Radisson until 2006, when it was sold and became a Crowne Plaza hotel.
