Showers and thunderstorms are expected Tuesday, and then rain will change over to snow for some.

The National Weather Service says showers and thunderstorms will become more widespread throughout the day, with the main threats being heavy rain, hail, lightning and strong winds.

Weather officials are predicting 1-2 inches of rain in the eastern part of the state through Wednesday, with spottier precipitation expected for the remainder of the week, reports note.

As the low-pressure system deepens, expect stronger winds, including gusts from 40 to 60 mph in far southern Minnesota by Wednesday morning, the weather service says. A high wind watch is in effect for that area from Tuesday night through Wednesday afternoon.

A foot of snow possible?

The rain is expected to change over to snow across northern Minnesota late Tuesday night and Wednesday. There's a winter storm watch in effect for north-central and northeastern Minnesota from late Tuesday night through Thursday.

The northland is expected to get 1.5 inches or more of rain through Tuesday, and then snow – Duluth could see 6-10 inches by the time the storm moves out, the National Weather Service in Duluth tweeted.

Heavy snow is expected during the Wednesday morning commute for the northland, the weather service says.

Gloomy for the rest of the week

Keep your umbrella handy, AccuWeather warns, noting wet weather is possible for the Twin Cities for the remainder of the week.

Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be the wettest days this week, followed by spottier precipitation on Thursday and Friday, and potentially again on Saturday, the publication notes.

Temperatures are expected to be cooler as well.
