Two deputies with the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office avoided injury when a passing motorist fired shots in their direction early Thursday morning in St. Paul.

Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher issued a release saying the incident happened around 3 a.m. on Hwy. 36, west of Interstate 35E. Fletcher says the deputies were in the process of conducting a traffic stop on westbound Hwy. 36 when "occupants of a vehicle driving eastbound fired multiple shots" at the deputies.

The deputies weren't hit, and reacted by letting the driver they pulled over immediately leave while they issued an alert describing the suspect vehicle, which fled the scene at a high rate of speed.

Shell casings were found at the scene, and as the deputies were investigating the location, a Maplewood police officer spotted a vehicle that matched the suspect vehicle description. The driver again fled, but a short time later a suspect was located  nearby and taken into custody. A gun was also recovered.

The case is under investigation and the identity of the suspect has not been released.

No one was injured.
