Recall in Minnesota: Check your fridge for these cheese products

Minnesota consumers are among those affected by a recall of "yogurt cheese spread" products due to the detection of a potentially dangerous bacteria.

"Out of an abundance of caution," Picnic Gourmet Spreads is recalling all six of their cheese spread varieties – Red Pepper Feta, Moroccan Cilantro, Tandoori Garlic, Herbed Goat Cheese, Parmesan, and Chipotle Sage – after a "routine" sample of one of the products tested positive for listeria monocytogenes, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

They were shipped to eights states and Washington, D.C., and have a "Best By" date of Oct. 6, the FDA says.

While there have been no illnesses so far, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control warns that listeria can be potentially fatal, even in cases that are detected and treated quickly.

Those most at risk are pregnant women, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems (such as AIDS and cancer patients).

Picnic Gourmet Spreads, a Maryland-based company, announced a voluntary recall in six states earlier this month, but the FDA's announcement this week now includes Illinois and Minnesota in the list of affected markets.

As the recall continues, the company says, "we are vigilantly working with experts ... and with the Maryland Department of Health to identify the source of this contamination, and will continue to do so until we are 100 percent certain that we can once again provide our customers with a safe and delicious product."

The FDA advises anyone with the products to throw them out.
