Recent snowfall creates potential for major flooding in Red River Valley

Since two major storms in west central and northwest Minnesota left up to 20 inches of snow this month, meteorologists have changed the flood forecast this spring in the Red River Valley.

Dan Luna, chief meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Chanhassen, tells KSTP that high waters are almost a guarantee and major flooding may also be on the horizon.

Just last month, there was only a small chance that any flooding would take place, but the high water content in the recent snowfall--as much as two inches of water in in some areas--could cause flooding as early as March.

The news came out of an emergency managers' conference in Brooklyn Center Thursday where the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources also announced the potential for a dangerous wildfire season this spring.
