Recipes! Parties! Snacks! Getting pumped up for the Super Bowl 'food holiday'

It could be argued that the winter holidays last through Super Bowl.

As usual, Vikings fans don't have a pigskin in the fight, but that doesn't mean we can't pig out during what has been termed "the nation's annual food holiday."

How much are we eating, and what's trendy?

Oh, yes, my friend, we will be consuming conspicuously.

FoxSports reports Super Bowl Sunday is the year's second-biggest day for eating; we only chow more on Thanksgiving. Citing research from the Calorie Control Council, ABC News said the average American will down 2,400 calories during the four- to five-hour football-commercials-and-halftime show extravaganza.

InPerspective, a publication produced by Minnetonka-based food giant Cargill, listed what it called the top "snack trends" for the party platters this year.

"Expect to see bacon-infused snacks," like bacon-wrapped chicken livers or dates. Also on-trend: savory or spicy gourmet popcorn and virtuous crunchy products made from vegetables, seeds and beans – think vegan kale snacks, crispy roasted seaweed and flavored chickpeas.

Help! What should I make?

Looking for good recipes?

KARE 11 has a Pinterest page with favorite Super Bowl snack recipes from anchors, reporters and the station's behind-the-scenes crew.

You can find the guacamole recipe that Eric Perkins made famous here.

The station also featured a cooking segment with easy appetizers, including a recipe for assembling an Eight-Layer Mediterranean Dip.

The Brainerd Dispatch offered "touchdown recipes" for Stuffed Mini Sweet Peppers (contains bacon!) and Smoky Chipotle Artichoke Dip.

On WCCO, radio host and MSP Magazine food critic Dara Moskowitz Grumdahl shared her five favorite guacamole recipes. They include what she terms a "perfect, simplest" concoction, a guac that combines avocados and bacon, and Chipotle's famous formula.

Where can I go to watch?

Not invited to a party? Minneapolis Eater tracked the 10 top Twin Cities bars for watching the Super Bowl.

It suggested the Northbound Smokehouse and Brewpub (2716 East 38th Street, Minneapolis) for those who are more interested in beer than the game.

Or Mac's Industrial Sports Bar (312 Central Ave. SE, Minneapolis) for the "high-fiving, play-calling, ref-questioning folks" who can belly up to the bar's signature totchos (tater tots loaded with cheese, green onions, pico del gallo, and sour cream) to spill on their jerseys.

The Town Hall Brewery (1430 Washington Ave. S. Minneapolis) plans a pregame chili cook-off. And Billy's on Grand (857 Grand Avenue St. Paul), known as a Packer bar during the regular season, promises to be packed "as NFL-ites enjoy their most holy of days."

Get to the wings already!

Wings are bound to fly to the top of any list of snack favorites, whether eaten at a sports bar or picked up as a take-out treat.

Minnesota Monthly's January issue features Buffalo Wild Wings CEO Sally Smith, called "Minnesota's highest-paid female CEO." Noting that the Super Bowl is the Golden Valley-based company's biggest day of the year, Smith said this year, BWW could outpace last year's Super Bowl record of selling some 9.1 million chicken wings on game day.

I need a good dessert

After all the beans, beef, beer and wings, how about a sweet treat as a dessert conversation piece?

The Fargo Forum featured a recipe for Deflategate brownie cookie, goodies shaped like an under-inflated footballs.

"Consider making 1 out of 12 cookies look like normal footballs," the story suggests, with the reminder that the NFL said that one ball out of the 12 tested was properly inflated. "It might be a good contrast and will tip off your guests that you meant to make mangled cookies."
