Record number of mayoral candidates for MPLS

Even by Minneapolis city election standards, where it seems like everyone knows someone who's running for something, there are a lot of people hoping to usher in the post-Rybak era.

The latest filings on the Secretary of State web site lists 34 candidates to replace Mayor R.T. Rybak as he winds down his third term.

It's a record, says the Star Tribune, according to the city clerk's office.

MinnPost had the number at 32 early Tuesday, but rightfully noted that there could be additions before the 5 p.m. deadline.

Tracking candidacies back to 1985, the City Clerk's office tells the Strib the only year that comes close to 2013 is 22 office-seekers in 2001 - perhaps not coincidentally, the year Rybak notched an upset of sorts.

The Associated Press says the final tally is 35.

One of the new candidates is listed as Captain Jack Sparrow, who's been involved in some Occupy protests over home foreclosures, according to MinnPost. He calls himself an occupirate. The Strib notes Bob "Again" Carney and Abdul M Rahaman "The Rock."

The Star Tribune also lists some "serious" candidates, but we won't do that here. We'll just say that there are, of course, some familiar faces ... er, names, like Betsy Hodges, Mark Andrew, Don Samuels, Cam Winton, Jackie Cherryhomes and Dan Cohen.

Why so many candidates? Because it's so darn cheap! Only $20 to run.
