Red Lake Band raising money for memorial, scholarship fund for children of slain officer Ryan Bialke

Bialke, killed while on duty Tuesday, is survived by a wife and four children.

The Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians is gathering donations to set up a memorial fund in honor of slain police officer Ryan Bialke.

Officer Bialke was shot and killed by an armed suspect while responding to a call about a potentially suicidal male Tuesday morning. The 37-year-old had been with the Red Lake Department of Public Safety for six years. He is survived by a wife and four children.

The Red Lake Band of Chippewa has set up a GoFundMe in Bialke's name. They're hoping to raise money to create a memorial and scholarship fund for his twin sons and two daughters, who "he loved more than anything," the fundraiser says.

"Officer Bialke ... was well liked and respected in the community, he was known to always go above and beyond his call of duty and would help anyone he could in the Red Lake Nation and more," the page's organizers wrote.

As of Friday morning the fund had brought in a little over $9,000 of the $100,000 goal.

Bialke was escorted to a funeral home in Bemidji by multiple law enforcement agencies Wednesday.

Earlier this week a 28-year-old was charged in federal court with killing Bialke. You can read more about the allegations here.
