The U. S. Senate passed a bill that would authorize the $2 billion Red River flood diversion project.
WDAY-TV reports that although the authorization would allow construction to begin, federal funding would need to be appropriated annually.
This spring flooding fears in the area were not realized.
“This is the first step on the road to making sure that Fargo Moorhead is protected against the event of a 500 year, up to a 500 year flood,” said Sen. Al Franken, (D) Minnesota.
The House must authorize the diversion before it can be funded.
