Golden Valley-based Courage Center and the Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute in Minneapolis officially merged Saturday, creating the Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute, part of Allina Health.

Interim president Jan Malcom tells MPR that the new organization combines Sister Kenny's expertise in treating people immediately after an accident or illness with Courage Center's ongoing community-based programs that help people return to independent living.

The Star Tribune says Courage Kenny pulls the six Courage Center sites and 29 Sister Kenney hospital and outpatient therapy locations under the new banner.

Dr. Penny Wheeler, Allina Health’s chief clinical officer, tells the newspaper that the combined facilities, staff and protocols of the two organizations will create a more seamless operation for patients using both Courage Center and Sister Kenny programs.

Allina expects it will take between 24 and 36 months to fully combine the organizations, the Business Journal reported.

The Courage Foundation and Sister Kenny Foundation will also merge and become the Courage Kenny Foundation.

The merger is the latest string of partnerships among health care organizations in Minnesota, according to the Star Tribune. On Jan.1, Park Nicollet and Health Partners came together to create one health system operating under the Health Partners name.
