Relatives: Toddler who survived crash that killed 2 has bright future, guardian angel

The Wadena 2-year-old was out of the hospital the day after the crash.

Tragedy visited a north central Minnesota highway Sunday when a car crash killed two people in Otter Tail County.

But relatives of Mason Mousseau suspect a guardian angel was also on hand – and consider the 2-year-old's future to be bright, in spite of the accident that claimed his mother.

The State Patrol says the crash a couple miles east of Deer Creek happened when Jessica Lannes, Mason's 31-year-old mother, tried to pass another vehicle on state highway 29. Her Oldsmobile Alero crashed head-on into the Chevy Tracker driven by Lucille Rehm, 63.

The women, both from Wadena, were killed in the crash. Mason was injured, the Patrol reported.

But Lannes' cousin, Nichole Hamann, tells the Wadena Pioneer Journal the boy's only physical injury was a broken wrist and he was back home in Wadena the day after the crash.

Hamann told the newspaper: "He clearly has a guardian angel as he [was] born premature and had health complications and then survived this with only a broken wrist."

A GoFundMe page that's raising money for expenses "related to the loss of Jess and the future of Mason" says the boy has a bright future.

There actually was another survivor of the crash: Lucille Rehm's dog.

Rehm's niece, Julie Rehm Kempenich, told the Pioneer Journal the spooked dog ran away after the accident but was found in a pasture about two miles away on Monday.

"I know my aunt can now rest in peace since her dog has been reunited with family," Kempenich said.
