Rene Sanchez named editor of Star Tribune

The managing editor of the Star Tribune since 2008 has been promoted to top editor and executive vice president, the Minneapolis newspaper reports.

Rene Sanchez, 48, will take over the position previously held by Nancy Barnes, who announced last month that she took a job at the Houston Chronicle.

"It will be tough to replace Nancy Barnes -- she is an exceptional editor," Sanchez said in a statement to the Pioneer Press. "But I am very excited by this challenge and honored to have it."

As managing editor, Sanchez oversees several departments, including investigative and special projects, and helped conceive the 2013 Pulitzer Prize-winning project on at home daycare deaths.

Sanchez came to the Star Tribune as a writer in 2004 after reporting for the Washington Post for 17 years.

The New Orleans native earned B.A. in journalism from Loyola.

Sanchez will begin his new role on Friday.
