Rep. Bachmann visiting troops in Afghanistan
U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., is spending Memorial Day visiting troops in Afghanistan.
Bachmann says she is leading a bipartisan group of congressional lawmakers who arrived in Afghanistan Saturday. They plan to meet with soldiers as well as military leaders for briefings about "the situation on the ground," Bachmann said in a press release.
"Every year on Memorial Day, soldiers, veterans, their families and friends, and thankful Americans gather across the nation to pay tribute to our brave sons and daughters who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our great nation," she said. "I can think of no greater honor than spending this important day with those who are currently serving our country in harm's way. We can never thank our troops enough."
Bachmann is traveling with Reps. Patrick Murphy, D-Florida, Markwayne Mullin, R-Oklahoma, John Barrow, D-Georgia, Sean Maloney, D-New York, and Peter Gallego, D-Texas, a spokesman told the Star Tribune.
President Barack Obama also made a surprise visit to Afghanistan, speaking Sunday to some of the 32,000 troops still stationed there.
Bachmann is retiring from Congress at the end of her fourth term, although she has vowed that she is "not going away." Last week, the combative congresswoman was on Fox News, urging the Obama administration to do more about bureaucratic problems at the Department of Veterans Affairs.
