Minnesota Eighth District U.S. Rep.-elect Rick Nolan has been named to the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, The Associated Press reports.

Nolan, who previously served as a U.S. representative from 1975 to 1982, was notified of the seat by Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and the House Democratic Caucus on Thursday.

Nolan upset one-term Republican Congressman Chip Cravaack in November's general election by a nine-point margin.

The incoming Democratic representative said he will use the seat to try to secure money for several projects in northeastern Minnesota, including the Northern Lights Express high speed rail project, The AP reports.

Nolan's three predecessors all held a seat on the same committee.

The congressman officially begins his term next Thursday.
