Rep. Rick Nolan says he supports Bernie Sanders for president

U.S. Congressman Rick Nolan will support Bernie Sanders at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia this July.

According to a statement from Nolan:

“The Democratic Party is fortunate to have two qualified presidential candidates, both of whom offer substantive solutions to the problems facing Americans. I’ve considered a number of factors in making this decision, including the will of Minnesota caucus attendees, specifically those in the 8th Congressional District. Bernie’s message and his authenticity appeals to voters here, and it appeals to me. I’ll be proud to cast my vote for him in Philadelphia this summer.”

Nolan is a superdelegate, which means he is free to support either candidate, Hilary Clinton or Sanders, at the convention.

Sanders won the Minnesota caucus, but superdelegates do not have to vote based on the results of a caucus or primary – and they can change their preferences before the convention.

Nolan is the third Minnesota superdelegate to endorse Sanders, Politico reportsRep. Keith Ellison and Rep. Collin Peterson have made statements supporting the Sanders campaign.

The Democratic National Committee includes 712 superdelegates, FiveThirtyEight says. The New York Times' 2016 delegate count says 469 superdelegates support Hilary Clinton – Sanders has 31.

Of Minnesota's other superdelegates (there are 16), several have thrown their support behind Hillary Clinton, including: Gov. Mark Dayton, Sen. Al Franken, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Rep. Tim Walz, according to FiveThirtyEight.
