Report: Amazon to open distribution center in Shakopee with up to 1,000 jobs

Amazon is reportedly on the verge of buying land in a Shakopee business park to develop a Twin Cities distribution center.

The Business Journal cites unidentified sources familiar with the negotiations in reporting that Amazon is nearing a deal to purchase 66 acres in the Shenandoah Business Park for a facility that would employ hundreds, perhaps more than 1,000 during the holiday shipping season.

The site is currently owned by United Properties, one of the Pohlad family's companies, the Business Journal says.

Neither Amazon nor United Properties would confirm the negotiations Monday, the Business Journal reports.

In October Amazon began charging sales tax on purchases by Minnesota residents, a move some analysts saw as a forerunner of a Twin Cities distribution center.

Amazon has a customer service center in Grand Forks, North Dakota, but this would be its first Minnesota facility.

The president of a consulting firm specializing in supply chain logistics tells the Pioneer Press a Shakopee distribution center would almost certainly mean that Amazon would begin offering same-day shipments in the Twin Cities – meaning orders placed before noon would arrive by 9 p.m.

Mark Wulfraat of MWVPL tells the newspaper 13 other metro areas in the U.S. have such service.
