The man believed to be behind the wheel of a crash in Orono that killed two young men last weekend has turned himself into police, according to multiple reports.

Orono PD says the 51-year-old turned himself in on Wednesday. As of 4:30 p. m. he was not listed on the Hennepin County Jail roster, nor have formal charges been filed against him.

The man is facing two counts of criminal vehicular homicide for the crash that killed Sam Schuneman, 24, and Mack Motzko, 20. Police have said they believe speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the crash.

Schuneman was the front seat passenger in a vehicle – a luxury Bentley, according to reports – that left the roadway near 3120 North Shore Drive around 11:35 p.m. Saturday. The car struck several trees, according to Orono police.

Schuneman died at the scene while Motzko, the son of Gophers hockey coach Bob Motzko, died after being taken to North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale. Motzko was in the back seat when the crash occurred.

The driver was also transferred to North Memorial. Police initially said he was in critical condition.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner said Motzko died early Sunday from "blunt force head injuries." Schuneman's cause of death was listed as "multiple blunt force injuries."
