The Minnesota Department of Health's latest flu report shows 33 additional flu-related deaths the week of Jan. 6, bringing the statewide total to 60 deaths--more than double the previous statewide total of 27.

FOX9 reports 88 percent of total deaths were patients age 65 or older. The latest update does not include any deaths in patients under the age of 24.

Nearly 500 people were hospitalized with the flu during the same week. Since the season began in October, 1,842 people have been hospitalized.

More than 90 schools reported flu outbreaks throughout the week as well.

Health officials said last week that Minnesota is in the midst of a severe flu season and suggested the state could be at the peak of this year's outbreak.

The Pioneer Press says the last bad flu year in Minnesota was in 2009, when there were 67 deaths and 1,824 hospitalizations.
