The pilot of a helicopter spraying for mosquitoes was killed when the aircraft crashed Wednesday morning into a Maplewood garage.

The Metropolitan Mosquito Control District confirmed that the helicopter, operated by Scott’s Helicopters in Le Sueur, Minn., had been dropping a natural agent used to kill mosquito larvae for the district, the Star Tribune reports.

Neighbors told reporters that they heard the helicopter crash, which sparked a fire at a detached garage. The helicopter narrowly missed a house.

The crash was in the 2700 block of Mayhill Road near Seventh Street in southern Maplewood, the Pioneer Press reported.

KARE 11 tweeted this image:

No one else was in the helicopter and no one on the ground was hurt, WCCO reported.

The crash site is near the Maplewood Nature Center. "I heard a big 'womp,' and then no more chopper noise," Chuck Deaver, a maintenance worker at the center, told the Pioneer Press.

The cause of the accident was not immediately reported. The National Transportation Safety Board is expected to investigate.

Media outlet images of the crash showed the helicopter in charred bits and pieces, poking into the charred wall of the garage.
