No longer content with territory along the U.S.-Mexican border, Mexican drug cartels are getting a bigger foothold in the Upper Midwest, including in Minnesota, the Associated Press reports as part of a new investigation.

Drug cartel members have surfaced in cases in Minnesota, there has been activity in Wisconsin, and the head of the Sinaloa cartel was recently named Chicago's Public Enemy No. 1, the AP reports.

An in-depth Associated Press probe indicates cartel groups have begun sending agents from their inner circles to the U.S., including to middle-class suburbs in the Midwest.
