A car hit by a Northstar commuter train that was thought to be unoccupied actually had an infant inside of it, WCCO reports.

The child – a boy – escaped injury, as did the woman who unsuccessfully tried to get him out of the car before the collision, the station says.

The Star Tribune and FOX 9 both identified the woman as the infant's mother.

Media outlets and Metro Transit initially reported the vehicle was abandoned when it was hit Monday morning in Elk River. Instead, the car reportedly slid on to the tracks (off Proctor Avenue, just north of Highway 10) after coming into contact with a second vehicle.

WCCO says the woman tried to move the car – with her infant inside – off the tracks but was unsuccessful. She then attempted to get her child out, but could not do so in time. She exited the vehicle, and the Northstar train hit the vehicle with the infant still inside, the station says.

According to Metro Traffic spokesman John Siqveland, the woman immediately retrieved her son from the car after the collision and went to a nearby business for help. Neither appeared to be hurt, he says.

Metro Transit says the train clipped the front, right side of the woman's vehicle at about 7:01 a.m. The accident delayed the commuter train for about 30 minutes and buses were dispatched to transport the train commuters.

Siqveland said it is not clear if the accident, which is under investigation, was weather related.
