Reported domestic assault leads to 5-hour standoff in Blaine
A man surrendered to police after approximately five hours of negotiations following an alleged domestic assault Monday in Blaine.
Blaine police were dispatched to a residence on the 9100 block of Tippecanoe Street Northeast around 3 p.m. after a woman called 911 reporting that a man was threatening her with a knife. The woman got one of her children out of the residence, but the man was still inside with a second child.
Police, on the belief that the man may have been in possession of a gun, chose not to approach the door. The man also didn't have a phone inside, so police evacuated neighbors and called in the Anoka County SWAT team, a negotiator from the Anoka County Sheriff's Office and a translator from St. Paul Police Department.
The negotiator communicated with the man over a public address system, with the man leaving the house with the child without incident around 8 p.m. The child was safe and the man was arrested.
Police have recommended charges of second-degree domestic assault and felony strangulation be filed by the Anoka County Attorney's Office.
