2 dead, 2 injured in Shoreview shooting

Ramsey County investigators are still piecing together the circumstances of a Tuesday morning shooting in a Shoreview home that left two people dead and two others injured.

But as the Pioneer Press reports, early indications point toward a case of domestic violence.

Sheriff's spokesman Randy Gustafson said a man and woman were killed, and another man and woman were injured, KARE 11 reported.

Sheriff's officials said the victims appeared to be the gunman who lived in the house and a woman who was in the process of moving out. Authorities did not identify them but information provided to media outlets by neighbors, a relative, and an employer suggest the dead are John L. Simpson, 65, and Nancy A. Sullivan, 57.

The Star Tribune reports the injured are Katie Fay, who was in critical condition at Regions Hospital, and Tony Brown. An unidentified relative told the Pioneer Press that Fay is Sullivan's daughter and that she and Brown have a child together.

Nancy Sullivan was a partner with the law firm Barnes & Thornburg, which issued a statement expressing its sadness over her death.

Gustafson of the sheriff's department could not confirm that the shooting was a murder-suicide, but he said the deceased male was believed to have been the only one who fired shots. And he said there is no continuing danger to the general public.

KSTP reported there were no children at the home at the time of the shooting. Neighbors told KSTP that they heard what sounded like yelling and screaming. A handgun was recovered at the scene, KSTP reported.

A neighbor, Larry Kramlinger, said that another neighbor who did not want to speak with the media was the first one on the scene, the Pioneer Press reported. Kramlinger said that man had been driving past the house at about 10 a.m. Tuesday when he saw two movers running out of the house screaming, "He's shooting everybody! Call 911!"

The Star Tribune spoke to next-door neighbor Kfir Batiller, 19, who said he had gone swimming in the couple's backyard pool and that the couple seemed "normal."

The home is near the intersection of County Road J and Grotto Street, on the north end of Shoreview, FOX 9 reported. Neighbors in the quiet suburb of single-family homes were shocked by the incident, FOX reported. A friend of Simpson's told the station there was no history of domestic violence in the couple's relationship and that children of both Sullivan and Simpson were shocked.

An associate with the Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women tells the Pioneer Press that before Tuesday's shooting there had already been at least 14 domestic violence homicides in the state this year. That compares to 18 in all of last year.

An official with the Domestic Abuse Project tells FOX that women are at the greatest risk of domestic violence when they are leaving their partner. Carol Arhtur suggests women seek help from an advocacy group or police if they plan to leave a partner who has threatened them or has ready access to a weapon.

KSTP has video of Gustafson talking to reporters Tuesday morning:
