Friends ID motorcyclist killed in crash related to S. Mpls. police shootout

A motorcyclist who was killed in a collision a Minneapolis Police squad car Friday has been identified as Ivan Romero, according to both WCCO-TV and Fox 9.

A passenger on Romero's motorcycle remains in stable condition; the police car was rushing to a shootout that left one man dead and two MPD officers wounded.

Minneapolis police say the two officers shot by a suspect in south Minneapolis Friday afternoon, along with an injured passenger on a motorcycle, are listed in satisfactory condition at Hennepin County Medical Center.

Minneapolis Police Chief Janee Harteau said it was a profoundly sad day for the department Friday after the two officers were injured and a police officer who was rushing to the scene collided with a motorcycle carrying two riders, killing one of them.

The man who is believed to have shot the two officers was killed. FOX 9 and the Star Tribune say family members have identified the suspect as 22-year-old Terrence Terrell Franklin.

No other suspects are being sought, police said.

The shooting took place at about 3:30 p.m. Friday in a residence that the suspect allegedly broke into at 2717 Bryant Ave. S.

The events leading up to the shooting are now coming into question, however, as two "well-placed sources" told KSTP that the officers are SWAT members and were shot by the suspect with a department-issued MP5 sub-machine gun.

The sources told the station that the suspect managed to grab the gun that was in a sling around the officer's neck -- a sling that normally hangs in front of the officer's body and across the chest and stomach -- and pulled the trigger.

At an evening news conference, Harteau could not confirm or deny that the officers were shot with police weapons, citing that the investigation was ongoing, KSTP reported.

WCCO reported that both of the officers were shot in the leg.

Police said both officers and the deceased suspect were all men. None of their names were immediately released.

Motorcycle fatality

According to KSTP, an officer responding to the shooting collided with a motorcycle. WCCO-TV reported that the accident happened at 26th and Blaisdell.

Police tweeted that two people – a man and a woman – were on the motorcycle. The man died and the woman was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center, where she is in satisfactory condition.

FOX 9 reported that neither were wearing helmets.

"The situation was a tragic one, and I want to make sure that we keep them and their families in our thoughts and prayers," Harteau said.

Incident begins with chase

Police said the incident began when the suspect fled police, initially in a car, then on foot.

Minnesota Public Radio reports that several dozen Minneapolis police officers surrounded the Bryant Ave. home owned by Jim Bickal, a senior producer at MPR.

Bickal's neighbor said that several gunshots appeared to be coming from the home.

Bickal had parked his car and walked up to his back porch when he noticed that his back door window was smashed, MPR says. He reportedly alerted police, who entered the home.

The homeowner saw a police officer on the front yard receiving medical treatment for what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the leg.

Police said only one suspect was involved in the shooting incident.
