Father arrested in connection with death of Barway Collins

The father of the 10-year-old boy whose body was found floating in the Mississippi River over the weekend has been arrested, reports say.

Crystal Police said in a news release Monday Barway Collins' father was arrested on suspicion of second-degree homicide in connection with his son's death.

The Hennepin County Attorney's Office will determine the official charges, which could come as early as Tuesday afternoon, MPR News reports. It is BringMeTheNews' policy not to name suspects until they are charged.

The Star Tribune reports the boy's 33-year-old father was handcuffed and taken from the apartment around noon Monday. FOX 9 notes Barway's father was taken from his Crystal apartment in the back of an unmarked police car.

Crystal police have said the father is a main suspect in the case, and they don't believe the boy's father has been truthful about his son's disappearance. The man has publicly denied any involvement however.

Barway, a fourth-grader, was last seen after school on March 18 near the apartment building where he lives. His body was found Saturday afternoon in the river at the North Mississippi Regional Park, near 53rd Avenue North and Lyndale Avenue North in North Minneapolis.

Searchers had focused on that area after police got a tip that the boy's father was seen there the day Barway disappeared. Police said they have "electronic evidence" that puts the father at the scene "at some point," the Pioneer Press reports.

The medical examiner has not said how Barway died.
