Republican Al DeKruif drops challenge of Tim Walz

A former state Senator has changed his mind about challenging Democrat Tim Walz in Minnesota's first congressional district.

The New Ulm Journal reports Al DeKruif says he's too busy with his business to give a congressional campaign the time it takes.

According to the Journal, DeKruif thinks the GOP is poised to oust the four-term incumbent from Mankato, so he's stepping aside to encourage others in the party to run. But he also kept open the possibility he might re-enter the race, depending on how things develop.

The Rochester Post-Bulletin reported last week that a first-time candidate, Aaron Miller of Byron, plans to enter the race Tuesday. The paper reports Miller, an Army reservist and decorated veteran, plans the spend the day travelling the southern Minnesota district.

At the moment, state Rep. Mike Benson of Rochester is the only Republican in the race.
