One of the five Republican legislators who voted to legalize same sex marriage is stepping down.

Rep. Andrea Kieffer, R-Woodbury, announced that she will not seek a third term in the Minnesota House next year.

Kieffer said in a statement, "It has been an honor to serve the last four years, but this was never intended to be a career for me."

MPR reports that along with Reps. David FitzSimmons of Albertville, Pat Garofalo of Farmington and Jenifer Loon of Eden Prairie; Kieffer voted to legalize same-sex marriage in Minnesota. Sen. Branden Petersen, R-Andover, was the lone Republican to support the measure in the Minnesota Senate.

House Minority Leader Kurt Daudt said that Kieffer will be missed.

The Woodbury Bulletin reports that a mix of frustration with the current political climate and a desire to spend more time raising awareness of mitochondrial disease were the main reasons for her departure from the legislature. The disorder afflicts her daughter.

The Associated Press reports that Kay Hendrickson is the only announced candidate for the House District 53B seat. Henderson will run as a Democrat.

The Bulletin reports that deputy chairwoman of the Minnesota Republican Party Kelly Fenton may be one possible candidate to run for the seat as a Republican.

"It's something I am seriously considering," Felton told the newspaper. "I have never, ever ruled out running for office."

Kieffer was first elected to the house in 2010 then re-elected in 2012.
