Republican supporters hope to draft Marty Seifert into governor's race

Backers of Marty Seifert have launched a write-in campaign for the former state representative as Minnesota Republicans consider who should challenge Gov. Mark Dayton.

MPR reports the party chairman in Beltrami County, Ken Cobb, launched the campaign as the GOP prepares to hold a straw poll at a central committee meeting this weekend.

Five candidates will appear on the straw poll ballot, according to MPR. They are: former Minnesota House Speaker Kurt Zellers, state Sen. Dave Thompson, Hennepin County Commissioner Jeff Johnson, business executive Scott Honour, and teacher Rob Farnsworth.

Seifert is a former House Minority Leader from Marshall who ran for governor in 2010 but dropped out of the race after Republicans endorsed Tom Emmer.

MinnPost reports 350 delegates and alternates will cast ballots in Saturday's straw poll.

Former Republican Senate staffer Michael Brodkorb sized up the candidates in an essay for MinnPost last month and wrote that any new candidates entering the race will trail those already running, organizationally speaking.

Even though Seifert has not entered the campaign, Cobb tells MPR he's the most electable candidate and thinks there's a strong possibility Seifert will jump into the race next month.
