Rescuers saved two seniors after the pickup truck they were in plunged into the fast-moving Otter Tail River in west-central Minnesota and started floating downstream, the Fergus Falls Journal reports.

The truck, driven on Interstate 94 just west of Fergus Falls by an 83-year-old Melrose, Minnesota, man, crashed into the river at about noon Monday, the newspaper reports.

A 79-year-old woman was also in the vehicle, identified by KFGO as the driver's wife.

The driver told investigators he had been driving about 60 mph when he fell asleep, and the truck went into the water and was taken a few hundred feet by the strong current before it got caught, the Journal reports. The truck, which had been towing a trailer with two riding lawn mowers, was eventually 80 percent submerged in the river, the Journal reports.

The Journal has several photos of the rescue, during which crews used a small boat and secured a line from the pickup to the shore, although exact details of how the rescue was performed were not available.

Both the man and woman had minor injuries and were treated and released from the hospital, according to a State Patrol report.

Fergus Falls police and fire departments, Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office were among the responders, the State Patrol says.
