Rescuers free construction worker pinned under concrete slab

Rescuers on Wednesday morning freed a man trapped under a concrete slab at a construction site behind a home in Edina. He was trapped about two and a half hours. Live TV coverage showed the man brought out and placed on a stretcher. The worker appeared conscious and alert as he was wheeled on a gurney to an ambulance, holding his head up at times, the Star Tribune reports.

The accident happened after the soil around him collapsed, causing the slab to roll over his legs, WCCO reports. The site is at a home just east of Interlachen Country Club in Edina.

A doctor and paramedics were in the trench with the man, who was talking with authorities during the rescue effort, KSTP says. The Associated Press reports the man was given pain medication to cope with his injuries while rescuers worked to free him.

KARE 11 reported that the man was face-down in a small confined space, but stable, during the rescue. He was home recovering later Wednesday, KARE reports. KARE has this video of the rescue:
